FASHION THERAPY: AN INTERVIEW WITH HARSHA GUPTA

Harsh Gupta’s modern, glamorous and fuss-free designs have been making heads turn. I caught up with the talented designer for an exclusive interview to know more about his dazzling creations. To find out the must have clothing this season, and this creative genius's inspirations and muses, read on!

What trends according to you are going to be big in the upcoming months?
In India : prints, denims and 60s inspired looks will be big in fall winter 2014-15, I guess. Soft and clean looks would be preferred too. I see a good space for red colour other than black, white and gold.

What are the top three must haves that every girl should have in her closet right now?
An interestingly cut vest-drape, a well fitted tea-length dress with low-back and a textured silk stole in solid colour or print.

What was your motivation behind entering the fashion industry?
I always wanted to design clothes. I loved and designed clothes since my childhood for myself and my family so it was natural for me to choose designing as a career. I could visualize, illustrate and drape clothes in an innovative manner much before i joined NIFT. I still have those childhood illustrations. I thank God for blessing me with this powerful ability to design.
Which celebrity are you looking forward to design for in the future?
If I had to design for a celebrity then surely I have a long list! From Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor, Kangna Ranaut, Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra, Sonam Kapoor, Aishwrya Rai, Anushka Sharma, Sri Devi, Rekha and my all-time favourite Sophie Choudhary, Ramona Arena to Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Frida Pinto, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, all of them. They are all simply stunning!

If you could design clothes for anyone in the whole world, who would you want it to be and why?
Honestly, I would love to see my designs on every woman across the globe. It’s such a high after all! Being loved and accepted by the masses is another level of satisfaction and joy. Today’s woman is an inspiration to me and many of us. She is a true star!!! By managing work, family, friends and a great social life, she has conquered almost everything that one could imagine and still look her best. She takes such good care of herself; it’s just unbelievable to see the ability to balance. Dressing up each one of them and helping them look their best would be all what I would want to do for the rest of my life as a designer. When I see a happy, satisfied face, I feel really great and motivated.

Where do you get the inspiration for your designs?
I always look around for an intriguing subject for my inspiration. What really excites me is nature, the unseen world, places, mystery, science and artists. I like to mix two ideas/stories to create a new story. I feel as a designer it’s very important to contribute or give something new to the industry and people. And to give something new, one must create new or invent. The will to invent or create new is what keeps me going. I always ask myself whether I have contributed in some or the other way as an artist, designer and entrepreneur to the fashion industry.

How would you describe your pre-fall collection?
My pre-fall 2014 collection celebrates the individuality of an independent, confident and a determined woman of today. It’s designed for the women, who are liberal and wanting to celebrate their curves.

What are your inspirations behind your pre-fall collection F ROZEN?
I was inspired by the bewitching beauty of "Lauren Bacall", the most prolific style icon of the 40s & 50s for my collection F ROZEN. She was an American actress of film, stage & musical theatre and renowned for her distinctive husky voice and sultry looks. ‘That gaze, the voice, the hair... It was just that confidence that I wanted to capture through my clothes.

What can we expect with from Harsh Harsh in the next?
Yes, there is something exciting coming up. We are aggressively working over developing a stronger and mass-centric product range under our brand HARSH HARSH that we plan to launch in the summers of 2015. We are quite excited about it. We believe and hoping that it will receive great love, support and acceptance amongst our lovely buyers and consumers. We have been working over various business strategies for the retail establishment of our brand across India lately. It’s been a great journey since the inception of HARSH HARSH. We have learnt a lot of new things. So now, it’s time to implement all that knowledge into constructing a more profound and enduring premium retail brand HARSH HARSH.
